Community Outreach Programme of Observation Visit to Shanthimandiram, Parappur
As part of the Ability Enhancement Course (AEC) under the subject “Working with Older Persons,” a community outreach and observation visit to Shanthimandiram, Parappur Old Age Home was conducted by the Department of Social Work on 24th August, 2024. A total of 30 students from the 1st and 2nd-year MSW programs, along with 4 faculty members, participated in the visit.
The students interacted with the elderly residents, listened to their life experiences, and participated in meaningful conversations that highlighted the importance of companionship in the later stages of life. To foster engagement, the students organized and performed cultural programs, including music and dance performances, which brought smiles and joy to the residents.
In addition to the interaction and cultural activities, the participants attended informative sessions on social security measures and various welfare programs designed for older persons. These sessions, conducted by the faculty members and resource persons, provided insights into government schemes and healthcare services available to the elderly. The session also highlighted the challenges faced by the older population in accessing these benefits.
