Postgraduate Department of English proudly organizes Student-Teacher Initiative under the aegis of Episteme: Academic Skill Upgradation Programme of the department. The initiative is  envisioned to identify passionate student-teachers from among the students of the department and design and deliver teaching sessions by students of the senior batches under the supervision of teachers.

Postgraduate Department of English organised the launch of Student-Teacher Initiative under the aegis of Episteme: Academic Skill Upgradation Programme of the department on 06 September 2021 on Microsoft Teams.  The Chief Guest was Dr.Chacko Jose P, Principal, St.Aloysius College, Elthuruth, Thrissur. In his keynote address following the launch, Dr. Chacko Jose P, shared his experiences of 27 years of teaching profession and added that the profession is designed for those who are passionate and humble. The event commenced at 12.20 pm with a moment of silent invocation, which was followed by welcome address delivered by Ms.Sheena Sarah Winny, Assistant Professor & Head. The focus of the presidential address articulated by Dr.Fr.Devis Chenginiyadan, Executive Director of the college, was on humanity and learning. Dr.Mathew Paul Ukken, Principal, in his message enlightened the participants about mentorship and its role in higher education.

Ms.Catherine Rose Alex, Student, third year BA English presented the concluding remarks and extended the note of gratitude. The event which concluded at 1 pm was attended by Vice Principals Dr.Rani M.J. and Dr. K.L Joy and 36 other participants comprising staff and students of the department. Ms.Supriya K.K, Assistant Professor was the moderator. The initiative envisioned to identify passionate student-teachers from among the students of the department and design and deliver teaching sessions by students of the senior batches under the supervision of teachers, was introduced on the previous day with the announcement of a curtain raiser activity wherein students were invited to share teaching videos of 5 minutes duration. Nine students responded and they are second year BA English students Gauri E, Amrutha Menon, Nourin Biju and P.A Hassna; third year BA English student Catherine Rose Alex; second year MA English students Mirna Fathima, Anagha Das, Ashna Manuval and Sreelakshmi N. Two teaching videos from among the nine were screened at the launch.

Student-Teacher Initiative by the English Department at Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies, Kodakara, conducted the first teaching session by 2nd year MA English student, Ms. Sreelakshmi N. She taught Kinds of Prose to the 3rd year BA English students on 20thSeptember 2021. The attempt made by the student was indeed applaudable. The lesson was taken on the online mode on Google Meet.  The student-teacher employed different techniques including an impressive power point presentation in imparting her lesson which made her lesson interesting. The lesson was taught in the online presence of the Class Animator of 3rd year BA English Ms. Shero C. S. and Student-Teacher Initiative incharge Ms. Metty Joby. The student-teacher was given suggestions for improvement for future teaching endeavours.

 

Student-Teacher Initiative by the English Department at Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies, Kodakara, conducted yet another teaching session by 2nd year BA English student, Ms. Gouri E. She taught a Grammar lesson to the 1st year BA English students on 26th November 2021. The attempt made by the student was indeed applaudable.  The student-teacher employed different techniques in imparting her lesson which made her lesson interesting. The lesson was taught in the presence of the Head of the Department Ms. Sheena Sarah Winny, Class Animator of 1st BA English Ms. Sunitha S. and Student-Teacher Initiative incharge Ms. Metty Joby.

The Student-Teacher Initiative by the English department of Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies was conducted on 23rd December 2021 by Ms. Mirna Fathima of 2nd Year MA English. She taught a poem The House of My Childhood by Dilip Chitre to the 1st year BA English students. The effort was appreciated by everyone present. She used the projector to present the poem as well as different pictures explaining various images. The lesson was taught in the presence of the Head of the Department, Ms. Sheena Sarah Winny, Assistant Professor Ms. Metty Joby, the 2nd year and 1st year MA students.

The Post Graduate Department of English conducted the first Student-Teacher Initiative for the academic year 2022-23 on 30 th June 2022. This is an initiative by the English Department to encourage students interested in teaching and planning to take up teaching as profession. Bijoy D of the 2 nd semester MA English engaged the 5 th semester BA English students with the topic Rasa in Criticism. The student-teacher approached the teaching topic confidently making use of relatable examples from life. This made the class interesting. He used the board to write important points to draw the attention of the students. He also asked questions in order to check how much has been grasped by the target audience. The students were interested in the class and answered the questions asked by the student-teacher. They interacted with enthusiasm in the class. They could relate with the topic more closely. The programme was successful with proper planning and preparation. The class was executed in the 5 th semester classroom. The audience also included the teachers from the
department and the 2 nd semester MA English students. The programme began with an introduction by the Student-Teacher Initiative in charge Ms. Metty Joby. The Head of the Department Dr. Sanal Raj Johnson felicitated the occasion and wished the student-teacher for presenting his lesson well. The programme was fruitful for all the budding teachers in the department.

This is an initiative by the English Department to encourage students interested in teaching and planning to take up teaching as profession. Amrutha Menon of the 5th Semester BA English engaged the 1st Semester BA English students with the topic — Simple present and Simple Past tense. The student-teacher approached the teaching topic confidently making use of relatable examples from life. This made the class interesting. She used the board to write important points to draw the attention of the students. She also asked questions in order to check how much has been grasped by the target audience. The students were interested in the class and answered the questions asked by the student-teacher. They interacted with enthusiasm in the class. They could relate with the topic more closely.
The programme was successful with proper planning and preparation. The class was executed in the 1st BA English classroom. The programme began with an introduction by the Student- Teacher Initiative programme incharge Ms. Metty Joby. At the end, the students as well as the incharge gave fruitful feedback to the student-teacher too.
