The PG Department of Psychology, in association with IQAC, commemorated World Environment Day on 5th June 2026 at the Campus Ground of Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies (Autonomous) under the theme “Greener Nature, Greater Future.” The observance was rooted in the growing understanding that climate change is not merely an environmental issue but also a psychological one. Rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and ecological degradation have increasingly been associated with eco – anxiety, climate distress, and uncertainty about the future, particularly among young adults. As a discipline concerned with human well-being, Psychology recognizes that a healthy environment is fundamental to mental health, resilience, and quality of life. The programme therefore aimed to promote environmental consciousness while inspiring hope and collective responsibility toward building a sustainable future.
A major highlight of the celebration was the planting of a Pterocarpus santalinus (Red Sandalwood) sapling by Rev. Dr. Joji Kallingal, Executive Director, and Mr. Suresh A. K., Head of the Department of Psychology, along with the faculty members and students of the UG and PG Psychology programmes. The selection of Red Sandalwood was deeply meaningful. Revered for its rarity, resilience, and enduring legacy, the tree symbolizes the transformative power of growth that unfolds gradually yet leaves a lasting impact. Its slow and steady development mirrors the journey of psychological well-being, one that is nurtured through patience, care, and perseverance. Likewise, building a sustainable future requires sustained commitment, collective responsibility, and the vision to invest in outcomes that may flourish long beyond the present generation. By planting a species whose significance transcends time, the Department reaffirmed its commitment to fostering both ecological sustainability and human flourishing. The event served as a powerful reminder that every tree planted today is a seed of hope for a greener planet, healthier minds, and a more sustainable future.
