On 12th August 2024, a Road Safety Awareness Programme was conducted at Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies, Kodakara, by the initiative of Department of Human Excellence with the aim of educating students and faculty about the importance of road safety and responsible driving habits. The seminar was led by Mr. O. A. Babu, a retired Sub-Inspector from the Mobile Traffic Awareness Unit Kerala Police and a certified Life Skill & Management Trainer. The event took place in the college’s seminar hall and decennial hall , drawing a large audience of students & faculty.
The seminar covered the following key topics:Introduction to Road Safety: The session began with an overview of road safety statistics in India, with a focus on the alarming rate of road accidents involving youth. Mr. Babu explained the significance of traffic laws and road safety in reducing accidents.Common Causes of Road Accidents: Detailed discussion on the major causes of accidents such as speeding, drunk driving, distractions (like mobile phone usage), non-adherence to traffic signals, and lack of proper vehicle maintenance.Safe Driving Practices: Mr. Babu emphasized the importance of wearing seat belts, helmets, and following speed limits. He shared tips on defensive driving techniques and the importance of being alert while on the road.Pedestrian Safety: Guidance was provided on safe pedestrian practices such as crossing the road at designated spots, understanding traffic signals, and avoiding distractions like mobile phones while walking.Traffic Law Enforcement: A brief on the legal aspects of road safety, including the penalties for traffic violations and the role of law enforcement in ensuring road safety.Life Skills in Road Safety: The trainer also incorporated the importance of life skills like patience, stress management, and decision-making in reducing road-related risks. He shared real-life incidents and lessons learned during his career as a traffic enforcement officer.
