The Department of Mathematics organized a unique photography competition titled ―REFLECTION 2025 – Kerala’s Math Beauty‖, celebrating the fusion of mathematics and culture. The event invited students to capture photographs that showcased mathematical patterns, shapes, and symmetry found in Kerala’s Onam traditions — such as Pookalam designs, traditional architecture, ornaments, and crafts. The competition aimed to help students discover how mathematical concepts like geometry, symmetry, proportion, and patterns are naturally embedded in cultural practices, promoting a deeper appreciation for both mathematics and Kerala’s heritage. Participants submitted stunning photographs reflecting the mathematical beauty in Onam related elements—such as circular Pookalam patterns demonstrating radial symmetry. A judging panel evaluated entries based on creativity, mathematical relevance, composition, and visual appeal. The following are the winners of the competition.
First Prize: Hilda Jobi, Second year BCom ACCA B
Second Prize : Harith Josson, Second year BSc I T
The REFLECTION 2025 – Kerala’s Math Beauty competition successfully merged culture and mathematics, inspiring students to see the subject beyond textbooks. It was an enriching experience that highlighted how mathematics beautifully exists in Kerala’s vibrant Onam
traditions.
