On 13th December 2024, the Department of Human Excellence, in association with the PG Department of Psychology and NSS unit of Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies, organized Samaavesh 2024, an annual community inclusive programme by the college to commemorate World Disability Day. The name Samaavesh in Sanskrit means ‘to abide together’, embodying the essence of inclusivity, community engagement, and mutual respect. This year, the event saw participation from three special schools: Madonna Special School for Mentally Challenged, Chalakudy; Shanti Bhavan, Chalakudy; and Asha Bhavan, Padavarad. A total of 100 students and their staff joined the event, making it a significant and heartwarming occasion.
The visiting students and their staff arrived by 10:30 AM and were warmly welcomed with refreshments and gifts. To ensure a personalized and engaging experience, each visiting child was paired with a student volunteer from the college who remained with the child throughout the day. The volunteers guided them around the campus to experience the college’s amenities, and that interaction helped foster bonds and create a sense of togetherness.
Lunch was served by 12:00 PM in the canteen with volunteers taking the initiative to bring meals directly to the children’s seating areas. This simple act of kindness went beyond mere service, fostering a sense of connection and mutual understanding. As volunteers shared meals and conversations with the children, they created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, breaking down barriers and promoting a shared sense of community.
Games commenced by 12:45pm, where both college students and the children participated equally. The games demonstrated camaraderie and equality, reinforcing the event’s message of inclusion. The official function started at 1:30 PM with a Welcome Address by Students’Counsellor Asst Prof. Rosalind Manjooran. The event was officially inaugurated
by Rev. Dr. Devis Chenginiyadan, Executive Director, who delivered an inspiringaddress. This was followed by the Principal’s Message from Dr. Joy K.L. The visiting children, who faced various mental and physical challenges, captivated the crowd with their lively performances. From energetic dances to heartfelt songs and humorous skits, their talent and enthusiasm shone through. The dedication and hard work of their teachers were evident in every performance, and their contribution to the event deserves heartfelt appreciation.
